Literature Review
Aboriginal peoples have long history. According to the book “Australia and New Zealand”, about the 300000 Aborigines who lived in Australia at that time belonged to more than 300 different groups and each group had its own land and language. After 1788, their way of life suddenly began to change. Thousands of Aborigines died in fights with the British or from the diseases that they brought to Australia. What happened in Tasmania is terrible. For example, in 1804 there were 190. By 1876 there were none. Between 1900 and 1930 special places were made where the Aborigines had to live, far away from other Australians. There are now between 50,000 and 90,000 Aborigines living in Australia, and life is very difficult for them. They cannot own land, they cannot get jobs very easily, and their children cannot go to school with white children. Nobody counted the Aborigines in the Australian population. Some people think that there is no hope for the Aboriginal people, and many of their languages disappeared.
Aborigines perform traditional rituals. They paint their body, sing a song, dance, and make music. They believed that a long time ago animals, plants, and humans made the world together. This time it is called ‘Dreamtime’, and there are many songs, stories, and pictures about it.
The picture on the right is a traditional Aboriginal rituals.
Aboriginal people have a traditional food. Damper is a type of bread that is made by hand, usually by Aboriginal women within the tribe. First the women would source local seeds and gather these into a large dish. They would then use millstones to slowly grind the seeds creating a flour. They would then add small splashes of water throughout the process to create a paste, then a dough. The dough would be heated over the coals of a fire until it was cooked, then served to the tribe. A large part of the traditional Aboriginal diet included native fruits and seeds that grew naturally within the area. The types of fruit and seed depends on the season and availability, but can include wild passionfruit, wild oranges, bush tomato, bush banana, bush plums, mulga seeds and wattle seeds. Aboriginal Australians would also gather honey and nectar from bees, honey ants, flowers and trees. Aborigines eat food that suits their environment.
