Abstract
This research article explores(studies)the food culture in New Zealand. The author used four different websites and one book to research famous food and way to cook them in the New Zealand. The author analysis shows that we can eat the various especially dish in New Zealand because there are many especially famous foods and Kiwis are eating with cultural recipe. Many tourists enjoy to eat them and to experience the New Zealand culture.
Introduction
New Zealand belongs to the Southern Hemisphere and has a wide range of nature such as grasslands and deserts. Each area has their own climate and culture. Also, according to Mynabi and JBC, when people go somewhere for sightseeing, most of people are interested in and research about the famous food in there and decide to what food to eat. It can be said that the famous place(country) is full of gourmet food. For example, in the United States, which comes to mind when traveling abroad, people can enjoy various dishes such as fast food, dessert using peanut butter, and roasted turkey. Also, in China, Chinese dishes such as small baskets and almond tofu are famous. However, New Zealand has only the image of sheep. The aim of this research is to explore the famous foods and the recipes in New Zealand.
Literature Review
In New Zealand, they are rich in beautiful seas and fertile land, everything from seafood, meat, and fruit to vegetables. First is about seafood. Mussel and Paua is famous. Mussel and Paua is a kind of shellfish. Paua shells are so beautiful that they are also used as accessories. The next is about meat. People can enjoy eating Mutton(Lamb), Venison(the meat of deer) and goat meat. Mutton is the meat of sheep and lamb refers to baby sheep meat. Maybe people know that New Zealand has many sheep and most of Kiwis eat them. The third is about fruits. Feijoa, kiwi fruit and grapes are famous. People use grapes for wine. Also, Feijoa is the sweet and sour green fruit like kiwi fruit. Last, is about vegetable. People can eat Kumara, Taro, Yam, Potato and Pumpkin. Kumara is the cultural food in New Zealand and it is a kind of sweet potato. Most of Kiwis consider them for the staple food. Generally, staple foods are mostly potatoes due to British culture. In New Zealand, there are various cultural ingredients and we can enjoy eating them.
In New Zealand, Kiwis cook those ingredients with cultural recipes. Fish and chips is one of the famous foods there. It is fried white fish and potatoes. People can eat one good enough for $10. The price of fried fish is about $ 3 each, and the chips are about $3 per scoop (looks like a large scoop, so scoop one chip). Also, Kiwis enjoy Meat pie(it using Mutton, Venisonand goat meat. Also, flour is famous there too, roast beef and BBQ. Someone often have BBQs during their homestay. Generally, staple foods are mostly potatoes due to British culture and Kiwis wrap with leaves and steam or bake. There are various dishes, but of course there are desserts too. Do you know the Pavlova, Lolly Cake and Hokey pokey ice? Pavlova is a kind of cake. It is baked meringue with fruit topped. Lolly Cake looks like colorful role cake. It has sprinkle soft candy and coconut on a dough lotion that is mixed condensed milk with crappy cookies and butter. Most of the people have seem to the “Hokey pokey dance”. It is the famous song in England, it might there is some relationships. Then, New Zealand is an ice cream powerhouse. This ice cream is with the caramel crunch. Agriculture and grazing are thriving in New Zealand, and wheat and dairy products are thriving. Kiwis cook their famous ingredients with their cultural recipes. When people go there, they must to enjoy those food culture.
Maori is a one of the most famous natives the New Zealand. “Hangi” is a kind of the famous traditional food for them. Natives make it by making a hole in the ground, using a burnt stone on the bottom, and cooked ingredients. They often cook fishes and potatoes, but now, they cook pork, mutton and pumpkin too. On the other hand, some of them wrap the staple food with leaves and steam or bake. These are the way of the Maori’s traditional cooking. Also, do you know the “Rewena Palana”? It is like a bread that is made by potatoes. In the past, Maori ate these out of hunger. Maori has many recipes for cooking and they eat them. It is not so primitive, so everyone should give it a try to eat.
Conclusion
Recent research on food culture in New Zealand has provided an understanding on what kind of ingredients are famous in New Zealand and how do Kiwis cook them there. Current findings suggest New Zealand has different cultures, some of which are related to their history and other countries. There is much nature and each has own climate so, we can touch and enjoy various food culture there. As for food, it is wide-ranging from seafood to potatoes. Then it is cooked in a variety of ways, including frying, steaming, and crushing. In that case, instead of just steaming, it is wrapped in leaves, special tools are used, and it is cultural. In New Zealand, British culture and Maori culture coexisted well, and the current food culture was established. Awareness of diet and eating habits has changed with the internationalization of food.
