Abstract
This research article introduces about the popular cuisines in New Zealand and make recommendation for tourist to eat. The author used 10 websites and few articles to research about New Zealand’s popular cuisines and what is the charm of these food. The author’s analysis shows that tourists who visit in New Zealand better eat Hangi and Povlova because they are very traditional and brings them a cool experience to make and eat those cuisine. There are many interesting traditional dishes in New Zealand, but among them Hangi and Povlova is the best food that author recommends.
Introduction
New Zealand is a country where many tourists come from many different countries. In fact, Omiya International Secondary School students will be going to New Zealand in third grade as foreign language training. When people go there, all tourists wants to fill fun and spend fulfilling time there. To be able to spend great time, isn’t it better to know what food they should eat.
Aren’t you interested in dish in New Zealand? Like in Japan, there are lots of great traditional food in New Zealand. However, I pick-up two cuisines to introduce. The aim of this research is to introduce two traditional dishes in New Zealand that tourist should try.
Literature Review
There are many popular foods in New Zealand. For example, crayfish, Kina, kiwi and fish and chips. Some of these cuisines has connection with Maori, which is New Zealand’ indigenous people. Maori’s cuisines mostly have seafood, mutton birds, fat lamb and more other foods. That is because New Zealand faced the sea so people can easily get material from ocean. This is one big reason that people who live in New Zealand eat many seafood from long time ago. Mutton bird is also Maori’s cuisine. Mutton bird looks like a crow, it is a big bird and has big wing. Mutton bird habitat is in Australia and New Zealand. It is interesting to try some traditional food that Maori used to eat.
Next, this article will introduce a famous food in New Zealand. The name is Hangi. If you hear cooking, what will you imagine? Don’t you have a concept of a kitchen? But, Hangi is cooked with earth oven. First, people will wrap the food with leaves (it can be aluminum foil & wire basket too) and cover with wet cloth. Then put that in ground with hot stone. According to a website, Hangi will take about 3-4 hours until finish cooking. (Māori Hangi – a Real Taste of Culture, n.d.) It will take long time to cook but if you are on a trip, you should want to go many other places. So, Hangi is nice cuisine to make during trip. Also, the way to cook Hangi is very rare but Maori inherited this dish. So it will became very interesting experience to cook and eat this food. Tourists can experience history in same time! The way of cooking and history of this food is interesting so tourists should try eating Hangi in New Zealand.
Last, this article will introduce Povlova as a sweet food in New Zealand. Berry in New Zealand is very nice so people want to eat cuisine that uses berry. Povlova is similar to cake but, it’s made of only egg and sugar (meringue). So, the taste of Povlova is very sweet! People mostly put strawberries on top. Also, there is a cream called double cream. This make Povlova taste sweet and, the lovely taste that many people like. Sometimes people have tea together. So maybe, you can have a communication with New Zealand people though having tea time with Povlova! Tourists can taste sweets that local people love. Also, have a conversation with local people.
Conclusion
There are many traditional dishes in New Zealand. That has a connection with New Zealand history and Maori’s messages. It will become a wonderful trip if tourist can feel those things though eating food there. This article suggests Hangi and Povlova for tourists to eat when they visit New Zealand. It is because people can learn history, have communication, and all the other things that can only feel in local places. This is very interesting and rare experience that tourist can enjoy! By writer’s perspective, student’s perspective, tourists’ perspective, and perspective of a person who have lived in that foreign country, this article recommends tourist to eat Hangi and Povlova in New Zealand.
